What makes Proof Lab unique? Tell the community/sustainability story.
We put a lot of effort into trying to make our store useful to our customers, and also to be a more responsible retailer, which are really one in the same. Those sound like very basic things, but they can pretty easily get overshadowed by the day to day pressures of running a small business. I think you pretty much have to have those two things built into the overall design of the store or else they get lost in the shuffle. One way we did this is with the experiential sort of activities we have. So as opposed to just offering ‘shopping’ as the activity you can do here, we have 7 subleased tenants that offer other things: a coffee shop, surf camp, skate camp, music lessons/studios, ceramics studio, toddlers art studio, native plant nursery, as well as a skate ramp/park, community event space, and bio-diesel station. We used to do ding repair/board shaping here, but that had to move next door for more space. We also helped start a group woodshop next door where a lot of our racks get built. The idea of including all these things is to try to crack the mall code where you just ‘shop’ and instead build a more interactive, experiential, creative, hands on, educational, community building environment that is driven by local independent small businesses. Its also just more fun – it makes it a more stimulating place to work and hang out at. And it helps contextualize and personalize the ‘shopping’ I think, which can seem so vacuous these days. On the more traditional side of the business (retail), we try to carry a wider range of brands/products than most surf/skate shops, give local smaller companies a shot, and lean towards more sustainable brands/products. These are some of the reasons why we opened Proof Lab Station.
What is the difference between the Surf Shop and the Station? Why the two?
Next to Proof Lab Surf & Skate Shop (6k sq ft), we have Proof Lab Station (2500 sq ft). We dont have a one liner to describe this store – but most people would see it as some combination of an outdoor store, a workwear store and an urban boutique. Our surf shop used to be in this space, but when we expanded we didnt want to abandon our original building, so we came up with this concept. We were also getting older and maturing out of wanting to wear just surf/skate brands at the time. Patagonia is the anchor brand here and takes up about 40% of the store, and then we have a bunch of our other complementary brands that are often also driven by a quality, sustainability, or US made story.
You carry a great selection of camping hardgoods – not many boutiques doing that, why, what about REI, all the usual questions we get from customers on it?
Yeah we just started offering some outdoor/camping hardgoods in the Station as well. So camp stoves, lighting, solar devices, some sleeping bags and tents, all the sort of stuff you would need to do most surf camping trips, or things you might want on a skate trip through Europe. Yes, you can get most of it at REI, and it seems like there are almost no independent camping shops left, but we just thought it made sense and looked fun so we’ll see how it goes. There’s a wave of new outdoor companies that I think are making more interesting (and often US made) versions of the traditional gear, so that’s exciting and promising. Plus it just felt weird to NOT have this stuff, like we were selling the look of the outdoor life but not the hardgoods you need to live that life. And our staff got tired of stocking up elsewhere for Burning Man!

With such great coffee brewing all day… How many cups do you end up taking down throughout the day?
Despite the fact that we serve some of the best coffee in LA I find myself drawn to a hot cup of tea, I am English after all!
I get a real sense of community when in the shop. Do all the Deus Stores have the same vibe?
There is most definitely the common vibe of enthusiasm that pulses through each flagship but how that enthusiasm manifests itself is unique to its particular location.
Community is key for Deus so it’s really the local cultures and how they embrace us that defines our presence from place to place.
Deus Ex Machina is a very artistic company, how do you decide what other brands and accessories are represented in your shop?
Well as you know we’re very fortunate to have our own label which we have collaborated with brands such as Woolrich, Converse, Reigning Champ and Makr to name but a few. Our third party products are really sourced based on great craftsmanship, a historic brand or local that sit alongside our own label. We carry a great watch brand you may have heard of, as well as Tanner Goods who make every leather piece by hand per order out of Oregon, Schott Leather jackets as worn by James Dean and Marlon Brando, Red Wing Boots and local designers Late Sunday Afternoon and Field Scout who are all Venice based.
If I wanted to order a Deus custom bike how long would it take to build?
The process usually takes about 20 weeks. All of our bikes are built by hand.
How often does Sunday Mass take place at the shop.
Our Sunday Mass happens every 3rd Sunday of the month which coincides with the Venice Vintage Motorcycle Club monthly ride, we fire up the barbecue, bring in our marvelous house band ‘John Wayne Bro’ and party it up!
What’s your favorite TSOVET watch?
Any of the SVT-FW44’s, they are the perfect combination of a little bit of old and new and scream style to me, and they sell very well here at The Emporium I have a crush on the camel band with blue markers version!
